Lacombe has the most intact concentration of Edwardian-era commercial architecture in Alberta, and that is not an accident of luck. After a fire in 1906 destroyed a row of wooden buildings, the town passed a bylaw requiring downtown construction in brick, stone, or cement block. What went up in the years before the First World War is largely what is still standing on 50 Avenue today.

The Flatiron Building, built in 1903 and 1904 in brick and sandstone, is the oldest flatiron building in Western Canada and a designated provincial historic site. Michener House, built in 1894, is the oldest known building in town and the birthplace of Governor General Roland Michener. Between 1987 and 1993 the Alberta Main Street Program restored 31 downtown buildings here, along with 35 signs and seven awnings.

The Leduc oil discovery in 1947 pushed a wave of single-storey bungalows out east and north of downtown through the late 1940s and 1950s.
