Stettler was founded in 1905 and named after Carl Stettler, a Swiss immigrant who filed a homestead claim here in 1903. It became a village in June 1906 and a town five months later. Today it holds 5,695 residents across 2,384 occupied dwellings, sitting at 820 metres on rolling prairie at the junction of Highway 12 and Highway 56.

The event that shaped the modern town happened on 3 May 1949, when oil was struck at the Gulf-Ellis No. 1 well ten kilometres southwest. The Stettler field became one of the largest and most important in the province, eventually producing 35,000 barrels a day.

A Mid-Century Town

That post-war petroleum boom is written directly into the housing. Roughly 40 per cent of Stettler homes were built between 1960 and 1980, and the 1970s alone account for 23 per cent of the total stock. Single detached homes dominate, and about 70 per cent of residents own rather than rent.

Central Stettler carries the character of that period, with mature trees, established streetscapes, and a mix of character homes and mid-century bungalows built mainly from the 1950s through the 1970s.

Downtown Stettler runs four blocks along 50th Street, and the town has kept a strong heritage presence, from the Town and Country Museum with its 26 buildings to the Alberta Prairie Railway, which has run vintage 1920s excursion trains to Big Valley for 37 years.
